Basic Safety Tips For Burglary Prevention

1. Make your house look the same whether you are home or away
1. Always keep the garage door shut
2. Put timers on lights and radios so they come on when you are gone
3. Turn your phone and answering machine down so they cannot be heard outside
2. If you are away for more than a day:
1. Have someone pick up your newspaper & mail
2. Have someone take your garbage cans to the curb and bring them back
3. Have someone water your outside plants and mow your lawn
3. Use motion detector lights outside rather than just leaving lights on
4. Have your parking area well lit
5. Don’t allow bushes and shrubs to grow next to your house, especially under windows and next to doors
6. Make sure your security system has a loud siren, is monitored, and consider a cell phone backup system
7. Always lock your doors and windows when you leave
8. Don’t hide a key outside (let a trusted neighbor have one instead)
9. Do not have valuables in view from a window
10. Discuss security issues with your children
